Animal Management Techniques

Take a look at some of the techniques farmers use to keep themselves and their animals safe.

Ruminant Digestive System

Ruminants are animals that have 1 stomach with 4 chambers. Examples of ruminants include: cows, goats, sheep, camels, giraffes, water buffalo, etc. Ruminants eat a variety of fresh roughages which are taken into the rumen and broken down into amino acids. Ruminants also re-chew their food (chewing the cud) or rumination which is when the feed comes up from the reticulum on its way back to the 3 chamber of the cows stomach.

Be sure to try the ruminant labeling activity located on the last photo.

Non-Ruminant Digestive System

Non- Ruminants are animals that have a simple stomach. When we think of non-ruminant farm animals we include horses, donkeys, pigs, and chickens. Non-ruminant animals usually eat more concentrates (grains) compared to roughages (hays). A pig has the simplest digestive system when compared to the horse and chicken.
